These educational programs for teachers provide resources for exploring Fermilab science with students in the classroom.
Participants earn continuing education credits (see individual workshops for details), gain hands-on experience with the program curriculum, and receive complete outlines for classroom experiences that align with the Next Generation Science Standards.
Phriendly Physics: K-2
Grades K-2
Teachers learn how to integrate science and engineering into their K-2 classrooms by incorporating the scientific method and the engineering design process through literacy instruction. Topics covered include force and motion, light and color, and the structure and properties of matter. Teachers gain resources that help them inspire curiosity in students and prepare children to ask good questions and think like scientists and engineers.
Insects at Work in Our World
Grades 1-2
Discover the world of insects and inspire future entomologists! Explore three diverse areas—wetlands, prairie, and woodlands—in search of insects and their relatives. Teachers also take home an insect collection to use in the classroom!
Phriendly Physics: 3-5
Grades 3-5
Phriendly Physics 3-5 focuses on the classroom. Teachers not only learn concepts, but also start to think like scientists. All of the activities from the workshop can be done in the classroom, many with inexpensive and/or household materials. The most important thing participating teachers will do is learn how to help students frame and explore their own questions like real scientists.
Beauty and Charm – Introduction to Particle Physics
Grades 6-9
Experience the Beauty and Charm curriculum as your students will! Master teachers lead the activities in the fifth edition of the Beauty & Charm manual and provide insight from experience with students
Energy and Ecosystems: Prairie, Water, and Woods
Grades 6-9
Three ecosystems in one workshop: prairie, water and woods. Investigate the dynamics of nature including energy cycles, resilience and biodiversity to reveal interdependent relationships among organisms within prairie, water and woodland ecosystems.
Summer Secondary Environmental Science Institute
Grades 9-12
This five-day course, offered at Fermilab, will deepen your understanding of soil composition and formation, ecology and restoration, aquatic ecology, and climate change through field and laboratory activities.
