QuarkNet

QuarkNet provides high school physics teachers with the capacity to develop their skills and bring a real physics research experience to their students.

The national QuarkNet program

QuarkNet is a nonprofit National Science Foundation-funded partnership between the University of Notre Dame and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. It serves to connect high school physics teachers and their students with opportunities to participate in hands-on physics research with experts in the field.

Fermilab’s local QuarkNet Center

In addition to partnering on the national QuarkNet program, Fermilab operates a local QuarkNet Center with the University of Chicago and the College of DuPage. One of about 50 centers nationally, the center connects high school teachers and students with particle physicists participating in experiments at Fermilab and at CERN.

The Fermilab/UChicago/College of DuPage QuarkNet Center offers:

  • An annual teacher workshop to help physics instructors enhance the curriculum in their classrooms.
  • Regular meetings with instructors during the school year to discuss how to effectively integrate physics research experiences into classroom activities.
  • Summer internship opportunities.that enable high school students to work on real-world projects with scientists and graduate and undergraduate students.
  • A Masterclass for high school students, an all-day program in which students analyze real high-energy physics data.

Teachers are invited to download the QuarkNet Data Activities Portolio and view materials and resources from past Fermilab QuarkNet Center workshops.
